Broad.cat 09 was held this past Friday. The afternoon began with an animated video by WeMake to present the different participants. Mark Coleran, interface designer, commenced with an introduction about his work; 5 minutes dedicated to a 20 year summary. On the other hand, his lecture seemed like a coaching session. Define yourself well so as to be comfortable and avoid burn-out. The solution: know and do what you really like in life.
Iñaki Martikorena of the public television channel Cuatro was next in line. A precise review of the graphic history of the channel during its first 4 years of existence, Iñaki underlined the corporate red, the channel’s simplicity and sense of humor. He explained how its identity has evolved, incorporating symbols as characters, the different presenters of the channel’s programs and the viewer’s implication. He also explained the promotion development during the Euro-Cup retransmission.
After a short pause, Jeff Conrad of Red Bee Media briefly described the changes that UKTVs 10 channels have undergone, (all with rebroadcast contents), and how they have provided each one with individual character. This was achieved through much introspection, making for an emotional choice on the viewers’ part. Now each channel is a whole new world due to a totally different graphic image, which in turn has boosted audience levels, resulting in bigger and better benefits.
To finish off the evening, the visual artist Quayola was in charge of uncovering his particular interest in architectural imagery; he views them as a process. He shared several of his projects which stem from architectural images, exploring deconstruction by means of different software, either reinterpreting through algorithms or carrying out a topographical analysis of fresco paintings. He also stressed the importance of music in his work, projects that explore music’s visualization.
The night continued at Club MauMau, where we had the great opportunity to chat with the participants in a relaxed atmosphere. Broad.cat is a great event where the lecturers were free to transmit and explain their own personal style when carrying out their different projects.
