Literature and cinema have suffered side by side, labelled as arch enemies for more than a century, when in reality this is completely untrue. The idea that a book inspires us to think and a movie is presented as previously chewed and digested material is a common concept, which demonstrates a complete lack of intelligent culture, (for example, let us compare Andrei Tarkovski with Danielle Steel). It is vital to remember that the reader's experience leads to a profound visualization of space, actions and characters, to name a few. What is a novel but a world of images and sensations which emerge from the pages? What is reading if not entering into each new world? The New Zealand Book Council has kept these concepts firmly in mind when producing their video to promote reading.
