In architecture, context is a key factor. When proposing a project, an architect has to keep in mind the manner in which the future construction will interact with the surrounding buildings and spaces. The multimedia resources that are being incorporated into this discipline, for example projections, domotics or augmented reality, allow this dialogue to be translated to the users, to avoid being perceived as anonymous masses and be converted into individualized and interactive spectators inside the architectural space.
Architects can no longer think in terms of finished structures, more along the lines of dynamic supports or multimedia platforms, authentic "digital canvases" que are filled with content, either artistic or otherwise. Naturally, this process is a two-way traffic street, if the architects are to perceive the structrues they are working on as digital canvases, the audiovisual creators are obligated to develop the four walls concept in a more literal manner.
It is no longer about only superimposing multimedia content on physical spaces. The content has to influence and modify the structure to form an audiovisual 4th dimension, (or should we refer to an "augmented dimension"?), which is very physical and present. During the past century, McLuhan warned that "the means is the message", the interaction between multimedia and architecture annouces that content shapes the container. The frontier between architecture and multimedia is more and more dynamic and fluid.
